Visiting Cambodian orphans receive free eye exams (September 2008)

Thirty Cambodian orphans were in Honolulu to meet and stay with their “email foster parents” for the first time. The children, ages 14-21, were here under the auspices of Email Foster Parents International. Some of them have been corresponding and their Hawai‘i foster families via the Internet for as long as three years.

During their two-week stay, many of the children enjoyed another first—their first eye exam. Optometrists Loretta Ng, O.D. and Jon Sakuda, O.D. along with Dr. Jenkins’ staff provided them with the prescriptions and identified any eye ailments.

“Many of the teens showed below-average eyesight,” said Dr. Ng. “We were delighted to provide them with prescriptions for glasses and the medications they needed.”

The children were from the Future Light Orphanage near Phnom Penh. All were trained Khmer classical dancers as well and were excited to share with others their culture, which is being revived after a civil brutal war.

KGMB9 produced a segment on the kids getting their eyes examined. Watch KGBM9 report.

Howard Dicus interviews Dr. Tyrie Jenkins on Everybody's Business on KHET (June 6, 2008)

Commentator Howard Dicus interviews Dr. Jenkins on LASIK in Hawaii. She gives an overview of the procedure and the latest technology, as well as local statistics.

LASIK is one of the most common elective procedures performed in the U.S.- more than 12 million since the first laser surgery was FDA-approved for use in LASIK in the mid-1990s. It is also the most studied.

More than 95 percent of patients worldwide report that they are satisfied. Newer technology has been cleared for U.S. military personnel and astronauts. Yet, LASIK is not for everyone. And Dr. Jenkins tells how that should be determined.
