CustomVue™ - The New Wave in Laser Refractive Surgery is Approved

by Dr. Tyrie Lee Jenkins

Back to Procedures and Treatments

CustomVue™, the latest technology in refractive surgery approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), sets a new standard for vision correction. It uses a map of your unique vision, as individual as your fingerprint, to laser-correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. In 2005, it was also approved for treating higher degrees of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Ophthalmology surgeons in Hawaii began implementing the new procedures as soon as they were available.

Patients that Dr. Carlos Omphroy and I previously discouraged from laser corrective eye surgery are now able to have the procedure done. One of my first CustomVue™ patients said he'd been waiting for this "next step in technology."

CustomVue™ adds an element of safety to this already successful procedure with more patients seeing 20/20 and fewer complaints of night vision problems or halos.

VISX, the maker of WaveScan® and CustomVue™ technology, call the ability to map individual differences and imperfections of your sight "the fingerprint of your vision." Many of these imperfections could never be measured before using standard methods for glasses and contact lenses.

Like your fingerprint or your DNA, the vision map is uniquely yours. With the new procedure, that unique map can be programmed into the laser, achieving a level of precision that literally takes laser eye surgery to the next - and most individualized - level.

Dr. Omphroy and I use the WaveScan® to analyze a patient's vision for an extremely precise measure of the refractive error. Now we are able to use the technology to actually treat and correct the patient's vision.

This approval is specifically for wavefront-guided LASIK for correction of myopic astigmatism up to -6.00D MRSE, with cylinder between 0.00 and -3.00D.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

CustomVue™ allows your surgeon to craft a unique correction for each individual eye. Using the VISX WaveScan® System, the surgeon captures a "fingerprint" or map of the eye which is 25 times more precise than what's measurable by standard methods for glasses and contact lenses.

WaveScan® evaluates nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism but it also captures other, more specific imperfections in each individual's vision. This data is then used to generate an individualized treatment, done with computer accuracy, for a CustomVue™ procedure. CustomVue™ was approved for treating farsightedness and higher degrees of myopia.

This new technique maps out the pattern of an individual's eye and, according to the FDA approved data, is superior and safer than methods that have been used before. Using the WaveScan® system is a quantum leap in tailoring the treatment to the unique qualities of someone's eyes.

The data supplied by VISX to the FDA reported 94 percent of patients treated with CustomVue™ seeing 20/20 at six months, and 74 percent seeing better than 20/20.

The advantage for CustomVue™ LASIK is the following:

  • Greater chance of achieving 20/20 vision
  • Great chance of achieving better than 20/20 vision
  • Reduced chance of losing visual quality or contrast sensitivity
  • Reduced change of night vision disturbances and glare.
