OMEGA - 3 OILS

Omega - 3s are essential fatty acids. "Essential" means that because they cannot be produced by the body, their inclusion in the diet is essential for good health. The two best sources of omega-3s are dark, oily, cold waterfish like salmon and flaxseed.

Omega - 3s are known to have many health benefits. Specifically, they have multiple properties which may help in the treatment of dry eyes.

They decrease inflammation. Their anti-inflammatory effect may explain the benefits of omega - 3 in the treatment of blepharitis and meibomitis which often occurs concurrently with dry eye.

They may also protect the lacrimal gland against apoptosis (programmed cell death) which may contribute to decreased tear production.

They may stimulate tear production. Meibomian glads use essential fatty acids to synthesize oil - another one of three layers of the tear film (the other two being water and mucous).

By decreasing inflammation, and augmenting the oil and water layers of the tear film, omega - 3 supplementation may provide a foundation for dry-eye treatment regimens.

We recommend at least 2000 mg or two capsules daily. Flaxseed oil and fish oil may be found over the counter and usually one capsule is 1000 mg. Side effects may include gastrointesinal upset either diarrhea or constipation.
